There are many literary references to art as compensation for a mental distress, but art as compensation for physical pain is less studied, although a mental pain follows almost always a chronic physical pain. One of the best examples is Frida Kahlo, who was used to brilliantly translate her own pain in art. Several studies that show the combination of art and physical pain will be reviewed.
Key words: arts, chronic pain, Frida Kahlo, melancholy.
